Essential SUP Paddling Techniques

Master the forward stroke, sweep stroke, and cross-bow turn to paddle efficiently in any condition.

tutorial intermediate lakesea
TLDR

The forward stroke uses your core, not your arms. The sweep stroke turns the board. The cross-bow turn is the most efficient pivot. Keep the paddle vertical and fully submerge the blade for maximum power transfer.

Ongelma

Most paddlers use arm-dominant strokes that waste energy and cause shoulder fatigue. Poor technique also makes the board hard to control in wind and chop.

Ratkaisu

Learn three essential strokes — forward, sweep, and cross-bow turn — with proper body mechanics. Practice each on calm water before progressing to challenging conditions.

Audience: Paddlers who want to paddle longer, faster, and with less fatigue.

Steps

  1. 1

Forward stroke: reach forward, plant the blade fully, pull back using torso rotation (not arms), exit at the ankle

  2. 2

Sweep stroke: reach forward at the rail, sweep the blade in a wide arc toward the tail, turn the board away from the paddle side

  3. 3

Cross-bow turn: place the paddle on the opposite side of the board without switching hands, pull toward the tail

  4. 4

Bracing: use a low brace for stability in chop — slap the blade flat on the water surface

  5. 5

Draw stroke: reach out sideways, pull the board laterally toward the paddle

Usein kysytyt kysymykset

How do I paddle in a straight line?

Use consistent stroke length on both sides. Switch sides every 5-10 strokes. Look at a fixed point on the horizon for reference.

Should I bend my knees?

Yes. Keep a slight bend in your knees as shock absorbers. Locked knees transfer every ripple to your core and reduce stability.

How do I paddle against the wind?

Lower your stance, use shorter quicker strokes, and stay closer to shore where wind is often reduced. If the wind is too strong, do not go out.
