Beginner's Guide to Paddling
Everything you need to know before your first time on the water.
1. Choose the Right Board
Start with a wide, stable board. The Aquafarer SUP Explorer 11 has a 32" width that provides a stable platform for first-time paddlers. Wider boards are more forgiving while you learn balance.
2. Safety First
Always wear a life vest (PFD). Attach the leash to your ankle. Check weather and wind conditions before launching. Start on calm, flat water —lakes and sheltered bays are ideal.
3. Basic Stance
Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, parallel to the carrying handle. Keep knees slightly bent. Look at the horizon, not your feet. Your core does the work, not your arms.
4. The Forward Stroke
Reach forward with the paddle blade, submerge it fully, and pull it back alongside the board. Switch sides every 5-10 strokes. Use your torso rotation —not just your arms —for power.
5. Turning
For a sweep turn: reach wide to the side and sweep in a half-circle toward the tail. For a reverse turn: paddle backward on one side. Practice both in open water before navigating tight spots.
6. Getting Back On
If you fall, stay with your board. Swim to the side, place your paddle on the board, and use a kick to push yourself up onto the deck in one motion. Keep your weight low.
