Water Safety Tips

Safety is not optional. Follow these guidelines every time you paddle.

1. Always Wear a PFD

A personal flotation device (life vest) is the most important piece of safety equipment. Aquafarer offers CE-certified life vests for all water conditions. Choose a vest rated for your environment —recreational (50N+) or offshore/SOLAS for open water.

2. Use a Leash

Always attach the leash to your ankle or calf. If you fall, your board stays within reach. A loose board is a hazard to other water users and leaves you without flotation.

3. Check Weather and Water Conditions

Check wind speed, direction, and forecast before launching. Wind above 15 mph makes paddling difficult and dangerous. Avoid offshore winds that blow you away from shore. Check tide and current tables for coastal paddling.

4. Know Cold Water Risks

Cold water shock is a danger even in summer. Water below 60°F (15°C) can cause gasping, hyperventilation, and loss of muscle control. Wear a wetsuit or drysuit in cold conditions. Never paddle alone in cold water.

5. Navigation Rules

Paddlers are classified as vessels and must follow navigation rules. Stay to the right (starboard) in channels. Yield to motorized vessels. Cross channels at a 90-degree angle when clear. Use a whistle or sound signal in low visibility.

6. Tell Someone Your Plan

Share your float plan with someone on shore: where you are launching, where you are going, and when you expect to return. Carry a fully charged phone in a waterproof case.
