Multi-Day Paddling Trip Planning

Extend your paddling adventures across multiple days with proper planning and gear.

Choosing the Right Watercraft

For multi-day trips, choose a board or kayak with enough deck space or storage for gear. The SUP Tour 12 at 12 ft provides ample deck space for strapping a dry bag. The Kayak Tandem with its 400 lb capacity can carry two people plus gear. On inflatable boards, distribute weight evenly and keep gear low to maintain stability.

Essential Gear Checklist

Paddling gear: board, paddle (plus spare), pump, repair kit, leash, life vest, whistle. Camping: lightweight tent, sleeping bag (rated for expected temps), sleeping pad, stove, fuel, cookware, water filter or purification tablets. Clothing: quick-dry layers, rain jacket, sun hat, wetsuit or drysuit if cold water. Navigation: waterproof map, compass, GPS device, phone in waterproof case.

Food & Water Planning

Plan for 1 gallon of water per person per day (or a reliable water filter). High-energy, lightweight food: dehydrated meals, nuts, trail mix, energy bars, tortillas, peanut butter, instant coffee. Pack food in dry bags and distribute across multiple bags in case one gets lost. Pack an extra day's food for emergencies.

Route Planning & Navigation

Plan to paddle 10-15 miles per day depending on conditions and your fitness level. Identify campsites, water sources, and bail-out points on your map. Note tide schedules for coastal trips. Tell someone on shore your complete route and expected return date. Check in at ranger stations or marinas along the way.

Weather Contingency

Multi-day trips require weather flexibility. Build in layover days for bad weather. Know the signs of approaching storms: rapidly building clouds, sudden wind shifts, dropping barometric pressure. If wind exceeds 15 mph, get off the water and set up camp early. A personal locator beacon (PLB) is strongly recommended for remote trips.

Leave No Trace

Pack out everything you pack in. Use established campsites where available. Bury human waste 200 feet from water and campsites. Use biodegradable soap sparingly and at least 200 feet from water. Respect wildlife — observe from a distance. Leave the water cleaner than you found it. Carry a trash bag for any litter you find along the shore.
